This project comprised of the repair and restoration of the external envelope of this Grade 2* listed early 18th century merchant’s house, which stood empty and derelict for 25 years until the Harringey Building Preservation Trust undertook the project to save it.

REPAIRING THE BUILDING

The building has large amounts of intact original 18th century fabric. Repair work involved the removal of 20th century shops in the front forecourt, and the complete refurbishment of the external envelope and repair of the structure of the building, including recreating all external architectural features such as railings, gates, doorcases and windows, numerous brickwork repairs and the repair and recovering of the roof.

Internally, large areas of original internal panelling and all internal doors survive. Fire damage to the staircase and internal panelling has been repaired. The scale of the work created a large conservation funding deficit and required an EH grant as well as support from the Architectural Heritage Fund.
