Rainham Village, in the London Borough of Havering, is a Conservation Area as part of the regeneration scheme Rainham Village Shopfront Award Scheme was initiated in 2001. In 2002, Butler Hegarty Architects carried out a Conservation Audit of all the properties to assess their suitability for grant funding. The 20 properties surveyed were 18th or 19th century one or two storey buildings with shopfronts, generally owned by small local and family run businesses. This audit surveyed the properties and identified good conservation actions to conserve fabric and recognise and enhance the character of these buildings and their shopfronts and assess their potential to contribute to the public realm and sense of place of Rainham.
Butler Hegarty Architects advised LBH on how to set up the grant scheme and have subsequently been employed as architects to all but two of the twenty shopfront projects. The scheme has been nominated for an RISC Conservation Award and has won a Green Apple Award.
