Butler Hegarty Architects has an expertise in the history of landscape and garden design. We have developed a series of landscape projects which complete the settings of listed buildings. Our projects explore the tensions between culture and nature, the permanent and temporary, the built and the unbuilt. Our landscapes are designed as temporal spaces which change with the seasons, and we work with the architectural and spatial qualities embodied in the growth and decay of plants and trees. We are interested in exploring how the particular sense of place is evoked through all the senses, and we refer to the body’s physical movement through the space of the garden or landscape. Other changing conditions are revealed and represented, such as historical narrative, and coincidence.
