Making Connections was carried out in parallel with work on the Hornchurch Conservation Area Appraisal. Butler + Hegarty Architects, in collaboration with Catherine Williamson, an artist / teacher, worked with a primary and a secondary school in Hornchurch, Langtons Junior School and Sanders Draper Secondary, on an Art and Design project which investigated the built environment and heritage of Hornchurch town centre. After taking photographs, making drawings of the area, and reflecting on and developing their ideas, the students transformed traffic cones (temporary ubiquitous impersonal devices used to redirect the flow of people or traffic), into vibrant personalised sculptures. The project culminated in a temporary installation of the finished traffic cones on the Queens Green, the major public space in Hornchurch, as part of the inaugural Hornchurch Festival in June 2003.
